The 1997 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Redwings
|
|
The Detroit Redwings captured the Stanley Cup in 1997, ending a 42 year drought.
Some claim they won the Cup for Steve Yzerman, the dedicated captain, others claim it was for the fans.
I say it was for themselves, the fans and the rest of the world, to prove that they could do it.
Sadly the celebration ended on June 13 1997 (Yes it was a Friday), when 3 members of the Wings organization were critically injured in a limo accident.
Thankfully, Slava Fetisov made a full recovery and is back playing for the Wings this season.
The other two men in the car were not so lucky.
Sergei Mnatsakonov, team massuer, will probably never walk again, right now he is recovering at home.
Vladimir Konstantinov (The Vladinator), is recovering in a facility in Florida.
